Days of Remembrance
Four days each year are Days of Remembrance. Each one is the 1st day of a new season. They fall on the 1st day of the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th months. The 1st day of the 1st month is the beginning of the year (Exodus 12:2). The 1st day of the 7th month is also the Day of Trumpets. Scripture calls it “a memorial of blowing of trumpets” (Leviticus 23:24).
The New Moon in Scripture
When Scripture says “new moon,” we understand it to mean the start of a new month. We do not wait to see the moon. In Scripture, people blew trumpets and gave offerings at the start of each month. It was a memorial before Yah:
Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your Elohim: I am YHWH your Elohim.
Numbers 10:10
- Numbers 28:11-15: Offerings were given at the start of every month.
- Psalm 81:3: “Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.”
- Ezekiel 46:1-3: The temple gate is opened on the Sabbath and on the new moon, and the people worship before YHWH.
- Isaiah 66:23: “from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith YHWH.”
- 1 Samuel 20:5, 18, 24-27: King Saul held a meal on the new moon and expected David to be at his table.
- Colossians 2:16-17: The new moon, the holy days and the Sabbath days are “a shadow of things to come; but the body of the Messiah.”
The Book of Jubilees
We do not believe the Book of Jubilees is inspired. It is not part of Scripture. We use it only as a witness to history. Jubilees names these same four days as the days of remembrance:
And on the new moon of the first month, and on the new moon of the fourth month, and on the new moon of the seventh month, and on the new moon of the tenth month are the days of remembrance, and the days of the seasons in the four divisions of the year. These are written and ordained as a testimony for ever.
Book of Jubilees 6:23
Jubilees says Noah kept these days to remember the flood (Jubilees 6:24-28). Genesis agrees with two of the dates. The tops of the mountains were seen on the 1st day of the 10th month (Genesis 8:5). The ground was dry on the 1st day of the 1st month (Genesis 8:13). Each season is 13 weeks long, so these four days split the year into four equal parts (Jubilees 6:29).
How to Observe
– This is a day of rest. Do no ordinary work.
– Blow a trumpet or shofar, or listen to one, as a memorial (Numbers 10:10, Psalm 81:3).
– Eat a meal with family and friends, like the new moon meal Saul expected David to join (1 Samuel 20:5, 18, 24-27).
– Remember what Yah has done this past season, and read about Noah and the flood.
