Hebrews 12:7–8

Interpretation. This answer is an interpretation or an open question.

Many Christians believe everyone is a child of God, but the Word does not teach that. In fact, the writer of Hebrews teaches against it. When talking about God’s discipline, he says that people God does not correct are not His true sons. They are like children born outside the family (Hebrews 12:7-8). The apostle John also makes a clear difference between God’s children and others in 1 John 3:7-10. He even gives a strong warning, “let no man deceive you”, before he explains the difference between God’s children and the Devil’s.

But the question still stands. Why create people He knows will be children of the Devil and headed for destruction? There are a few ways to answer. One way is to look at how the Most High describes Himself in Scripture. He “made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil” (Proverbs 16:4). Since He is the owner, Paul adds that the Most High has the right to do what He wants with what He made (Romans 9:21-22).

Still, before the Word changes us, we often judge God unfairly. So here is an example that may help. It is not from Scripture, but it shows how wise and right God is. Imagine the government had a machine that could predict the future, and it had been proven to be 100% right. At the start of the year, someone knocks on your door. They hand you a list of every traffic ticket you will get that year, and they order you to pay the fines for these future crimes. Wouldn’t you ask to go before a judge? You would say it is unfair to be charged for something you have not had a chance to do yet. A “future” sinner whom God never let exist might make the same complaint.

Some might say, “But He is God. If He never lets them exist, how could they complain?” The answer is that He is not just God. He is the only wise, just, fair, and right God (Deuteronomy 32:4). So He is patient. He gives all people a fair chance to find Him, even though He knows many will not (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43). Then, after He has gathered all the evidence, everyone will have their day before the Judge (2 Corinthians 5:10, Revelation 20:11-12).
